How Artificial Blue Light May Reduce Visual Contrast
Modern life frequently exposes us to blue light, found in abundance in artificial and digital light sources. This particular light type can lead to several visual difficulties.
For instance, wavelengths in the blue part of the spectrum are more likely to scatter when compared with other wavelengths. As a result, this interferes with how the eye can perceive and distinguish details, potentially making scenes appear fuzzy.2 Another issue is visual discomfort, often experienced as an intrusive glare effect. There are cells in the retina of the eye that can activate this discomfort glare when exposed to blue wavelengths.3
The cumulative effect of these difficulties in processing blue light may further contribute to eye troubles because the eyes can’t see things as clearly; this may cause additional visual discomfort and other negative effects.4
This explains why reducing blue light exposure and glare is an important strategy for many people.
