How Light, Motion, and Flickering Can Lead to Vertigo, Dizziness

If you are someone who is susceptible to light and visual sensitivity, you probably know just how everything in your environment can turn into a threat for dizziness or vertigo. From bright, flashing lights in your favorite movie or concert setting to the evenly-spaced vertical blinds that let in disorienting stripes of light, your eyes can have a hard time processing what you see and become quickly overwhelmed.

In particular, the combination of contrasting patterns or light, along with movement, can lead to the turbulence and spatial disruption that so many feel.1 In fact, here is how Tahlia from Australia described her vertigo:

I was out shopping…and I bent down to get some of my kid’s favorite snacks, and it was like an explosion went off in my head. My world was spinning fast and I felt like I was frozen in one spot. I was in the middle of Aldi when my first episode took place, and the spinning has never really gone away three months later. I recognized my [issues] were bright lights, fast-moving objects and crowded places…"

An underlying sensitivity to light, including to glare and flicker, can make these sensations of “spinning” and “unbalanced” more common.2 Vestibular migraine, post-concussion syndrome, and autism are among the many conditions that can share dizziness/vertigo AND light sensitivity as symptoms.

Excessive screen time (greater than 4 hours per day) may be particularly problematic behavior for people with visual sensitivity or are otherwise prone to dizziness.3 Other light sources like fluorescent lights have been repeatedly identified as disruptive visual stimuli.4,5

Manage Light and Visual Sensitivity with TheraSpecs

TheraSpecs glasses are the ultimate protector for any situation that may overwhelm your senses. Our range of lenses target the most irritating wavelengths of light if you are sensitive to patterns and other visual phenomena, so you can wear them while watching TV or movies, while using your computer or mobile device, or going shopping in a brightly-lit store.

In particular, we have a series of lenses that cut down on the blue light between 480-520nm, which is most harmful for those who are generally sensitive to light (such as fluorescents). We also have other lens options that filter at the opposite end of the light spectrum, which is most associated with the visual disorientation from patterns and flashing or flickering lights.

In addition, prism prescription glasses—which have been frequently recommended for different types of visual sensitivity—can be made with any of TheraSpecs lens types.6 This gives you the most complete range of protection for your needs.

TheraSpecs Z-Blue™ is designed to provide optimal protection against harsh and/or flashing lights and repeating patterns. We recommend Z-Blue lenses for non-fluorescent light sensitivity, as well as general visual hypersensitivity to the environment.

TheraSpecs FL-Pro™ offers the strongest FL-41 filtering at 480-520nm in order to protect you against the aggravating light of computer and device screens, fluorescent lighting, LEDs and other artificial sources. FL-Pro can be particularly helpful if you are generally sensitive to light OR if you have tried Z-Blue and need different protection (and vice versa).

TheraSpecs FL-Blend™ also uses FL-41 and balances filtering of the critical wavelengths between 480-520nm with more natural color perception to provide protection from artificial light.

TheraSpecs FL-Sun™ applies the FL-41 tint to dark, polarized lenses that cut down on bright sunlight and harsh glare, making them the best sunglasses you’ll own.

*By cutting down on your exposure to light between 480-520nm, TheraSpecs collection of FL-41 lenses (FL-Pro, FL-Blend, and FL-Sun) may help people to also live well with vestibular migraine, as part of an overall light management plan.

These TheraSpecs Lenses:

  • Reduce your exposure to flickering lights and disorienting visual stimuli (Z-Blue and FL-Pro)
  • Filter irritating light from the environment with a variety of tints and strengths
  • Protect you from screens, fluorescents, LEDs, and other artificial light (FL-Pro, FL-Blend, and Z-Blue)
  • Protect you from sunlight and outdoor glare (FL-Sun)
  • Can be made with prescription lenses, including prism prescription lenses
  • Block 100% of UVA/UVB light and feature anti-glare coatings for harsh glare reduction
