It probably goes without saying that the COVID-19 pandemic has affected all of us in different ways, particularly in how we work as well as how we engage in academic education. Many of us are now working from home or participating in virtual learning, which adds its own set of stressors, and many are also using digital devices more—leading to complications like headaches, migraine attacks and photophobia. Karin, from Washington, is a TheraSpecs customer who felt the immediate impact of the pandemic as an elementary school teacher.
As a migraine sufferer for the better part of three decades, Karin knows the pain that the headache disorder can have on a person. Some of her attacks have landed her in the emergency room, begging for mercy and relief from the agonizing symptoms. She also has become well aware of what provokes her episodes, specifically citing screen use as a top trigger. With this knowledge, she has worked hard to design a way to avoid extended screen time while still caring for the students she teaches on a daily basis.
Then, the pandemic hit. Quarantines, “stay at home” orders and virtual education became the norm in society, and Karin had to adjust quickly while still putting her own health first in order to provide for her family.
"All my teaching went virtual," she told us. "I panicked about how to care for myself and teach my students on-line without becoming extremely ill."
Her colleagues recommended different approaches to help calm the migraine storm, such as dimming lights, using monitor covers, and trying natural lighting strategies. Unfortunately, nothing could give her the sustained protection and relief she needed to be effective and healthy on the job. That is, until her school district’s “tech guy” (as she called him) recommended contacting the TheraSpecs team.
Sure enough, TheraSpecs glasses were the missing piece for Karin as she navigated this new virtual classroom setting. As a prescription glasses wearer, she opted for the fit-over TheraSpecs frame (called WearOver). Now she doesn’t have to worry about her screen triggers cutting her down in the middle of a school day.
"I can't believe the difference! I can work all day on the computer and feel refreshed at the end of the day. My migraines have decreased dramatically. I am not afraid to log on each morning knowing my eyes and brain are protected," she said.
Karin is now among the thousands who have tried and felt the difference with TheraSpecs since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially for how they improve functioning and pain levels in front of screens. Most importantly, she represents the latest customer who can now do more with our glasses than she could previously. As a result, she plans to always keep them nearby.
"Thank you Theraspecs! I won't live life without them from now on!" she added.
You are very welcome, Karin! We wish you the best and hope your story inspires others to give TheraSpecs a try for their light sensitivity.
